Memory Monday....

Well, February sure got here fast!!  Oh my goodness!!

But, it's Monday and that means it's Memory Monday time.  Today's theme is "My School Days".  If you want to join us for this Monday Meme, check out Retired Not Tired  and link up!

I have written about my school days, here and there, but will put some more thoughts down, for today's meme.  Some of you will be bored...you have seen most of this already.

I went to a private kindergarten, because it wasn't part of the public school system way back in the mid-1950s.  My kindergarten teacher's name was Miss Hill.  I don't have too many memories about kindergarten, other than I know I liked my teacher, and I remember we had mats to take naps on.

Kindergarten graduation.  That's me in the back row - tallest girl.

First grade was not a good experience for me.  My only memories of first grade are of not liking my teacher, Miss Gibson.  She was mean to me and I was nervous around her.  I've written about being kept in at recess because she didn't like the picture I drew, of Mary Poppins, and made me draw Snow White instead.  She didn't know about Mary Poppins.  We had issues!!  LOL  I do remember the dress I wore in this picture.  It was gray and yellow. I loved it.

I loved my second grade teacher, Mrs. Everhart.  She made school fun!  I got glasses for the first time, in first grade, but remember showing off my new glasses for 'show and tell' in second grade. I also loved reading, and got gold seals on my 'Reading Circle' certificate, in first, second and third grades.  I begged my mom for a pixie cut, in second grade, because my older cousin, Peggy, had one.  I got my pixie cut....

I don't have any memories of third grade, other than my teacher was Mrs. Meriweather.  My third grade picture is below, and I had a girlfriend who was almost as tall as me - back row.  I am the girl with her hair pulled back looking rather nerdy, then Dee Ann, with the black braids, and Mrs. Meriweather is next to her.

Rather than posting pictures from all twelve years of school (yes, I do have them!),  I'll just acknowledge that my fourth grade teacher was Mrs. Gablehouse.  I loved how she wrote her "G" and practiced it over and over so mine could be as pretty as hers.  I also had my first crush on a boy in fourth grade.  His name was Doug.

My family moved from Washington Court House, Ohio, the summer between fourth and fifth grade. I started grade five in Millersport Elementary, Millersport, Ohio.  My teacher was Mrs. Whitington. Sixth grade was Mr. Nairn. Then on to Junior High.

My new hometown, Millersport, is still a small town in central Ohio.  My school had kindergarten through 12th grade all in the same building.  The elementary school was separated from the junior/high school by the auditorium and cafeteria.  I started trumpet lessons in fifth grade, and by eighth grade, was first chair, first trumpet in the junior high band.  I was in band through my senior year, and loved marching band, especially.  I also loved my art classes.  I was voted most talented senior girl, and got my picture in the yearbook, with the most talented senior boy, Mike Hopkins.  I have mentioned before, that I have an interest in architecture.  I wanted to take drafting in high school, but they wouldn't let girls take shop or drafting back then.  We had to take home economics and child development.  I really wanted to take drafting, and should have raised a stink....but we did what we were told to do (pretty much) back then.

My senior picture.  I used lots of hairspray and big plastic pink curlers to tame the curls back then!  I also taped my bangs every night.

I graduated in May 1970.  I went to a one-year business college, which is now Columbus University, and got my diploma from there.  While going to school, I also got married (in December 1970), when my boyfriend got home from Vietnam and out of the Marine Corp.  I worked while my husband went to college on the GI Bill.  He eventually got his Masters Degree.  After 10 years of marriage, we divorced.  That's a whole other story.

To finish the school days story, I didn't go back to school until I was 48 years old.  Joe was so supportive of me.  I got my BA degree when I was 50 years old. I went to Warner University, a fully accredited school, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, and will just say that I was terrified to go back to the discipline of school, while still working full time, but I did it.  Some of my credits were accepted from my business college (Columbus, Ohio) and I CLEPed several courses to qualify for the fast-track adult learning degrees.  Warner is a Christian College and I was asked to start the graduation with the opening words (like a call to worship).  I was really honored, and terrified again, because I don't like public speaking.

So, there you have my memories of school days.  I didn't mention the friendships made during my school years.  I am blessed to still be in touch with quite a few of my classmates, and especially my two best girlfriends from school, Elaine and Karen.  I am also connected, on FB, with a few teachers from those high school days.  I was so blessed to have gone to a small school, in a small town.

Thanks for peeking in today!!  Peace & blessings!  Have a good week!

  1. Oh how beautiful!!! Thank you for the memories. I only remember 2 teachers: Mr. Potter (he was African American-History 7th grade-for he started the whole journey for me for the love of History.) and then Mrs. Butler 9th Grade English, my husband will tell you, he has nightmares about her, not me, I loved her. Oh, and for kindergarten-1st grade, I went to a Catholic school and remember getting my knuckles rapped. I have nightmares about that nun. Shuddering that thought, wink. (I wasn't exactly a model child, lol--I hate conformity.)

I always enjoy your "memories", truly I do. Thanks for sharing. Blessings

  2. Thanks for sharing some of your memories. My mom made me have a pixie for years. I hated it. Everyone thought I was a boy. Ugh! I don't remember school before 4th grade. We moved a lot and I went to a bunch of different schools.
    Have a great day!

  3. I enjoyed your many memories, and noticed that we had similar hair styles in one pic (the one where you rolled your hair on pink rollers)!
Kudos to you for returning to school, late in life, to get your degree! I thought about it, and actually took a few on-line 'early childhood' courses, but didn't have the drive or determination to finish.

  4. I love hearing your memories and today was extra special. I do not have any pictures until Jr. High and the only reason I have them is that a friend I had back then, mailed me the Jr. High annual! The only high school picture is the one for the year book. What happened in between all that, I have no clue. Odd huh?

  6. What a small world we live in! My daughter graduated in 2014 from Warner University! She was a ministry student. She is now living in the Clearwater area and is getting ready to pursue her Masters at Asbury Theological Seminary at the Orlando Campus. Hubby and I have other relatives and friends that have graduated from there over the years. My hubby is a pastor in the First Church of God that Warner is associated with. Who knows, we may know some of the same people. :)

    1. Cathy, my class was an adult learning class, with classes held in Lakeland. I only had two classes on campus. I graduated in 2002, and Joe and I don't attend the Church of God. It IS a small world, though, and the school is terrific!! It has grown fast these last few years, too! Congratulations to your daughter!

    2. It is a good school and my daughter loved it. Congrats to you too. Sometimes I have considered going to college (I've never gone at all), but I think I'm content with what I'm doing and probably never will go.

  8. Good for you for going back to school and getting that degree!
Marching band was the best, wasn't it? I loved it so much that I was also in my college's marching band!

  9. Oh my goodness!!! I absolutely loved reading all these memories and seeing the pictures! I have no idea how I would condense mine into a blog post. I am so impressed that you went back to school and worked full time as well.

  10. Great memories and photos! Yes, I remember that girls couldn't take shop or be in FFA (Future Farmers of America). I did take a class in horticulture, an all girls' class, of course. Another time I hope you write about some of the naughty or funny things you got up to at school. Hope your Monday was a good day.
