Purple People Eater
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Purple People Eater (1958)
Unfamiliar with this song? Hear it here.
1) When actor Sheb Wooley brought this song to MGM Records, they initially rejected it, saying it just wasn't the kind of thing they wanted to be associated with. Then executives discovered how popular the audition recording was with the 20-somethings in the office. MGM released it after all and it became a #1 hit. Tell us about a time you were glad you changed your mind about something. Oh gosh, I change my mind over little things often, such as in the grocery or a department store. Big things? Can't think of a big thing right now. Big decisions are usually made with much thought and consideration.
3) The song was initially inspired by Sputnik, the satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1958. In the 21st century, do you think space exploration is a worthwhile public investment? Or would you prefer governments spend that money here on earth? Space exploration has brought so much progress to technology so (in my mind) it has been a great investment. Our government has turned most of it over to private enterprises. Think CT scans, cleaner water, LED technology, heart health, fire detection... the list is tremendous.
5) This record was the biggest hit Sheb Wooley ever had. He was better known as an actor, co-starring with Clint Eastwood on the 1950s TV show, Rawhide. What's your favorite Clint Eastwood movie? Hands down, Gran Torino.
7) In 1958, when this song was popular, hula hoops were a national craze. Did you ever play with a hula hoop? If yes, were you good at it? I did play with hula hoops and was pretty good at it back when I was skinny and my bones were young!! Ha!
9) Random question: Do you believe women gossip more than men? No, men just don't call it gossip!

Interesting song and enjoyed reading your answers, Terri! I love the picture of your friend Elaine with the bear. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
ReplyDeleteI always got such a kick out of that song, Terri. And the NFL? No way am I watching! I'll stick to college football this coming season.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Amen(!) to boycotting the NFL! Even Tom's come around to following college ball. Had to chuckle at the creatures from outer space inhabiting D.C. Clint Eastwood was so good in everything he did ... the first thing that came to my mind was "Play Misty for me." Happy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteI agree...those must be aliens living in DC. They sure don't represent "we the people" anymore. Love that old song. I still sing it ever so often...maybe when I'm trying to hula-hoop. LOL. Haven't done THAT in a LONG time. You are blessed to have your BFF Elaine, and yes, she and her hubby were definitely a Godsend to you this past year. Love the photo of her and the bear. Always enjoyed the Clint Eastwood films...Good Bad and the Ugly, etc....
ReplyDelete"Maybe many living in DC"....bhahahahahahahahahaha....hahahahahah....hahahahaha! Nailed it! Have a great day and a wonderful weekend, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI wish we would explore the oceans more... there are real purple people eaters there! Everyone is interested in space and we know so little.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you have Elaine and Jim! They sounds like the best friends.
ReplyDeleteYour answer to #4 cracked me up.
I agree with you on #9. Loved your answers. Have a nice weekend.

I remember well the Flying Purple People Eater song. My sister and I sang it in the car a lot and drove our folks crazy!!
ReplyDeleteOnce I make my mind up about something, I usually stick to it but try to be flexible. I know I'm not always right.
ReplyDeleteNever have liked football of any kind. We watched professional baseball for awhile back in the 80s but even that got boring.
I had a hula hoop too! Wouldn't even attempt it now. Would probably break something. *lol*
Blessings. xx
I remember that song well! I laughed out lood at your comment of aliens in DC. :)
ReplyDeleteI used to hula hoop too. Those days are done...
