Star Spangled Banner
Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: The National Anthem (2016)
... because it's the 4th of July
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) An early handwritten manuscript of "The Star Spangled Banner" (complete with scratch-outs) is preserved at the Maryland Historical Society. Today, much of what we write is preserved in The Cloud. Do you often write down your thoughts with pen or pencil? Or do you do everything on your laptop, pad, or phone? I still write on paper. I do reminders that way and always the grocery list.
2) It's well-known that the lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key. Not so well known is John Stafford Smith, the British composer who gave us the music. He is buried in England's Gloucester Cathedral, under both the US and UK flags. Where is the nearest United States flag waving near you right now? There are five or six flags on my street, including outside my house.
3) This week's video features Lady Gaga singing The National Anthem before the 2016 Super Bowl. She also performed it at President Biden's Inauguration last January. When is the last time you sang it? I don't remember. It is out of my range and I'm a terrible singer so I don't even try to sing it anymore.
4) Our second and third Presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both died on July 4, 1826. OK, it's your turn. Share a Presidential fact. Well, I had to go looking for something interesting and found this: When Millard Fillmore moved into the White House, it didn’t have a Bible. He and his wife, Abigail, installed the first library.
5) John Hancock said his signature on the Declaration of Independence was intentionally large so King George could see it without his glasses. Do you need glasses to read? No, I do not. I am near-sighted. Can't see distance without my glasses though.
6) The Revolutionary War still raged during that summer of 1777. General George Washington allowed his soldiers to celebrate with a double ration of rum on July 4. Will you be toasting the United States with an adult beverage this weekend? I may have a glass of wine at the potluck on Sunday.

7) Since this year, July 4th falls on a Sunday, banks and post offices will be closed on Monday. Thanks to email and ATMs, Sam doesn't find this a hardship. How about you? Do you find it inconvenient to go an extra day without regular USPS delivery or access to a teller at the bank? I have to work Monday. It's really no big deal but our trash day gets moved to Wednesday (instead of Tuesday) so I need to remember that!
8) Celebrity chef Rachael Ray says she considers mini-hamburgers, or "sliders," the All-American food. What will you be eating this 4th of July? There will be hamburgers and hotdogs supplied by our management and everyone who comes will bring something to share. There will be salads, veggies, and probably lots of desserts. Yum!!
9) The 4th of July is a highlight of the summer season. Have you yet suffered the traditional warm-weather maladies: sunburn or bug bites? Nope. I don't go out in the sun much anymore because I burn and have had some skin cancer issues. I also don't go out at night when the bugs are biting!! No thank you. It is easier and more comfortable to stay inside.

Peace & hugs! Jesus loves us!

Staying inside sounds like a good plan to me too. I might mow before the hurricane or tropical storm hits, but it's not urgent. Tall grass never hurt anyone. *lol*
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. I hope your 4th is enjoyable and pleasant.
Blessings. xx
Have a beautiful July 4, Terri. smiles
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Fourth of July weekend, Terri!
ReplyDeleteThose bugs tend to drive me inside too. Hope you have a good weekend and happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteThe bugs have been awful this year! But these pop up showers are keeping us at home some too. Happy weekend! Pour me a glass of wine when you get yours! heehee!
ReplyDeleteHave a great 4th!
ReplyDeleteI'm a paper and pen gal, myself ... addicted to colored, lined index cards. (Seriously, I keep them in my desk, kitchen drawer, purse and car!) Gosh, the last time I remember singing the National Anthem was in h.s. choir. Enjoy your potluck ... pass the wine! 😍
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.... :)
ReplyDeleteThe bugs keep me inside too. I hate that about bugs. Loved your answers! Have a safe and Happy 4th of July!

Loved your answers. I write down grocery list, and use sticky notes a lot for reminders here and there. I quit handwriting my journal, however, and I know someday some descendant will wonder why I quit when I did, but if they can get to my blog they will understand! LOL. I sang the National Anthem on Memorial day Sunday. We sang it at the end of the service in church that day. I love to sing it and do so every chance I get. I often sing it when I put the flag out on the front porch in the morning...but not so the neighbors can hear me. It's usually quite early and they might call the police for me disturbing the peace. And we also don't go out at night these days due to the bugs. And it's too hot in the daytime, so we stay inside a lot more than I like. We do try to walk early in the morning. The bugs aren't usually too bad then or in the afternoon after supper. Have a happy 4th. That pot luck sounds good. Our church is having one next Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHooray for any president who installed a library! No matter what his politics were that wins a lot of bonus points! I hope your pot luck is lots of fun...I'm sure it will be as is everything your community does. I'll look forward to hearing about it on Monday! Have a safe and happy 4th, Terri!
ReplyDeleteHooray for a Bible in the White House! Wonder if anyone in this administration even reads it.
ReplyDeleteCelebrate in style tomorrow, Terri!
I write lists on paper too.
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact about Millard Fillmore and hooray for him.
Somehow, I can't put Lady Gaga and her liberal thoughts with singing the Anthem...
Enjoy tomorrow!
My favorite way to celebrate the 4th of July (now that I'm older) is to watch the TV program at the Washington DC mall. I like (much of) music.
