A Ricky Nelson Saturday 9...

It's Late

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

It's Late (1959)

Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

1) Ricky Nelson laments that he should have been home hours ago. When is the last time you stayed up later than you should have? What were you doing?  I can't even remember. I am ready for bed by 10:00 and staying up until 11:00 is really late for me.

2) Compounding Ricky's problem is that he's nearly out of gas. How is your gas tank right now? When did you most recently fill 'er up?  The gas tank is almost full.  We filled up Wednesday, before heading for the farm (Joe's client).

3) It gets worse! He can't call home because he doesn't have a dime for the pay phone. Have you recently been in a situation where you've been glad you had your cell phone handy?  Not in any emergency, but I am always happy to have my cell phone handy.

4) The video for this song is from an episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Ozzie Nelson, Ricky's father, was in charge of the show and made the rules. One was that no one was allowed to smoke on the set ... except his wife, Harriet. Do you smoke? Have you ever lived with a smoker?  I quit smoking in 1983.  Both of my folks smoked but mom quit long before dad did. My dad died of lung cancer.  Not a pretty way to leave this world.

5) Life magazine coined the phrase "teen idol" to describe Ricky's popularity. According to Tiger Beat, today's teen idols include Johnny Orlando and Ruby Jay. Johnny was born in 2003, Ruby in 2004. Sam admits that before today, she had no idea who these young people are. How about you? I laugh all the time because someone is making news and I have no idea who it is (including those mentioned here) but I had a huge crush on Ricky Nelson and actually got to see him perform in person when I was in my 20s. Oh my goodness, he was SO cute.

6) While
Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan have posthumously praised Ricky Nelson's music, 1950s music critics dismissed him as a lightweight. What's the last review you read? Was it written by a professional critic, or was it contributed by a consumer to a site like Amazon or Yelp?  The latest review I read was yesterday and it was book reviews by a couple of blogging friends. I pay attention to what my friends and family think, but I could really care less about critics' views.

7) At the height of his popularity, Ricky tried his hand at movies, appearing in the western Rio Bravo with John Wayne. He turned 18 during the filming, and Wayne celebrated by playfully throwing Ricky into a sack of horse manure. Do you think pranks and practical jokes are funny?  Not so much anymore. I think the older we get, those silly things just become sillier.

8) In 1959, when this song was popular, the St. Lawrence Seaway was completed. It connects Canada to our Great Lakes. Without looking it up, can you name all 5 Great Lakes?  Yep. I used to live right on Lake Erie.  Huron, Michigan, Superior, and Ontario.

9) Random question – You drive past a local motel and see the car of a very married friend right there in the lot. Would you ask her about it?  I probably would. She should know she isn't hiding very well. Ha!

Thanks for your visit!!  Thanks to Sam Winters for today's meme. You can visit her HERE.

Happy June 1st!!
Peace & hugs.  God bless!!

  3. My aunt who is 9 years older than me, had Ricky Nelson pictures all over her bedroom walls when she was a teenager. He was a cutie for sure.

  4. "Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan have posthumously praised Ricky Nelson's music."

I did not know McCartney and Dylan were dead.

About driving late ... did you know that if you drove for 23 hours and 55 minutes you would be 5 minutes from Tulsa?

    God bless.

  5. What a thrill, seeing Ricky perform in person! I actually liked him better when he married Kristen Harmon (wasn't she exquisite?) and became a father.
I, too, could care less about (so-called) critics' reviews. Hope you're staying cool!

  6. Ricky Nelson was one of my first favorites when I began listing to teen music on the radio. Loved watching the Ozzie and Harriet Show, too. I was saddened to hear of Ricky's death at all too young of an age.

  7. I really didn't think of reviews by blogging friends. I guess I just think of them as sharing opinions. Those are the only reviews I read, though. Hope you are having a lovely day, a cooler day.

  8. Kudos to you, you are the first one that I've read that got all 5 of the GReat Lakes. Yes, Ricky was a heart throb for sure!

  9. I take recommendations from the blogging friends I trust much quicker than those of critics when it comes to books. So far, haven't been disappointed!
I was a little young to have a "crush" on Ricky Nelson, but do remember how good looking he was. And yes, he did have talent.
    Blessings, Terri!
