- My boss and I had a conversation this afternoon about Americans retiring to another country. She is thinking about it because her mom has been doing research on it and has found that rent and health care are much less expensive in many other countries. My boss is a few years younger than me. As attractive as "less expensive" sounds to me, since we will have a very limited income when I retire in two or three years, I'm not sure I could leave the USA, knowing I would not be coming back. Any thoughts on this subject? Maybe for half a year? Panama is #1 on the list, linked below....
- HERE is an article from Forbes Magazine with the 2014 List of top retirement countries.
- I haven't confessed it yet but have started a change in eating habits (refusing to say the "d" word). I'm doing low carb, high fat. My friend Teena has lost over 80 pounds doing it. I'm hoping for that much, but I think 50 will get me on the knee surgery list. Motivated right now anyway.
- Has anyone else noticed that it is beginning to get dark a little earlier already? Maybe it's just that we have had cloudy and rainy evenings lately, but by 8:30 it is dark outside now.
- I posted this on my Facebook page today, so some of you have seen it. It really made me chuckle and I hope it gives you a giggle too!
That's all from me today! Wishing you a good Tuesday! Thanks for stopping by! Peace & hugs.

We never considered living elsewhere due to the fine staff of doctors locally who treat John's many conditions. We searched tirelessly for years and God has blessed us with very compassionate doctors. It is fun to dream of all the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteOur school nurse's mother is from Panama, & she lived there through high school. She said she would love to retire there, but her husband is from here & won't leave! She also said that Panama is booming now with people retiring and moving there.
ReplyDeleteLove that minion quote!! Thanks for sharing!
I'm no help here, because I can't imagine living permanently in the US. I'm too used to a different lifestyle. I suppose Panama would be similar to Florida though. All those high-rise buildings remind me a bit of Miami.
ReplyDeleteHope your new eating habits work for you. As for the message you've shared from FB, how many youngsters do you know who know how to use a cassette? I'm constantly saying how much better cassettes are for listening comprehensions. Sometimes students need to listen to a certain section again.
Haha, yeah, that's a cute cartoon. :-) I was in Panama once, and it was like walking into a sauna. Hot and humid to the extreme, not something I'd like. Then again, I couldn't afford England. lol Even so, it's a very different thing to vacation somewhere than it is to actually leave all family and friends forever to relocate.
ReplyDeleteI hear Belize is also a good place...not sure if I could permanently leave America, no matter how bad it gets (hey, Obama did say he was gong to change America). Anyways, I can't say it has not crossed our minds.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the changing of the diet. I am sure if things keep on going the way they are, we all will be eating cardboard sooner than later (I am-that is being silly).
I noticed that about the getting darker, yesterday it was like 8:45 pm. Blessings
Like others have said, I would worry most about the health care in another country. Sounds good in theory, but I think you would have to be pretty adventurous to invest in that plan - and I'm not.
ReplyDeleteA co-worker was just telling me the other day he wanted to move to Belize because it is so much cheaper there. He is planning a trip this winter to check it out in person. If I didn't have health problems I would have no problem moving somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Those countries would be nice to visit, but I am proud to be living in the good old USA and here I will stay. Diet? what's that? I have gained weight this past year and cannot get it off again. Sigh! Love the minion cartoon...Happy Tuesday my friend.
ReplyDeleteI would be leery of living in another country because of their laws. I would definitely check them out if I were to move to one. I guess because we are so global now people are thinking about moving to another country as if moving to another state. At my age I intend to stay put. As far as Medicare and our supplement goes it has taken good care of us so far with all our medical probs, especially my hubbies. Love the funny. Hugs, LJ
ReplyDeleteInteresting thoughts on retirement but I don't want to go anywhere else. What the list doesn't tell you is about the high humidity, crazy traffic, and not always the products you want in the day you go to the store. We have missionary friends who tell about the high points of Panama City but also the realities. I know some people like the exotic and the only way they slow down is to be in another area. Whatever makes them happy.
ReplyDeleteQuestion - - with the high fat, what is that doing to your cholesterol? My husband has now successfully lost 48 pounds over two years and I have lost 20. We did it by lifestyle changes - - - - only make one change every week or two - - - like more grilled than fried food. We rarely eat anything fried now. In fact it often upsets my stomach if I do. Portion control - - especially on desserts. More fruits and vegetables. Have you ever kept a food diary for a day or a week? It will show you the problem areas you have. It's a rude eye-opener. However, it helps you target where to begin with changes. I read or heard this past week that you are rarely successful with someone else's diet plan. You have to take the things you love to eat and figure out how to modify them which is basically what we did. Will be praying for you. It's hard to do especially when you work cuz there is generally food temptation everywhere.
I like your cartoon, too. Had a friend (a CPA) who lost his job here a few years ago, and went back to school to get a degree in motel/hotel management. He moved to Belize and manages a large hotel on the beach. A mutual friend hears from him from time to time. He's pretty happy there, but comes back to the US for any medical care he or his son need. But then, they are relatively young and healthy. Good to have you back and posting again, Terri. Hugs
ReplyDeleteMy friend was just talking about this and the research he too is doing on the subject. He retires in August. I hope he doesn't leave, but I want to see him happy and safe above all else.
ReplyDeleteWe lived our entire lives in Lancaster County, PA and then moved to State College six years ago. That was enough change for me and still feels too far away from the center of our universe most of the time. I have no desire to move to another country.
ReplyDeleteBlessings on the weight loss effort. I lost 24 pounds the other year and have unfortunately gained half of them back. It seems to be mostly in my head - the sticking to something or not. Right now I'm in the "not" stage.
I guess I have no sense of adventure, I would never leave the USA for good. It's home. But so many others just take off and do it ~ I'm 'chicken.'
ReplyDeleteHa! I love that cartoon!
ReplyDeleteOur neighbors are getting ready to move to Costa Rica in a few years. I would never be able to be that far away from family and friends...
We plan to remain in the USA when hubby retires, maybe even stay in our current house. We have no desire to leave the USA, in spite of all the #$% that's going on.
