As most of you know, Saturday was the Florida Fish & Wildlife's 29th Youth Fishing Derby at my work - Tenoroc Publix Use Area. We had around 75-80 kids, along with their parents/grandparents, and it seemed like everyone had a good time! The fish were biting and I was told there were some big catfish and tilapia being pulled out of the water.
There were four education stations and the kids who completed them all received a free fishing pole with a tackle box and tackle. There was a place to learn about archery and actually shoot an arrow. We had a casting contest with trophies. There were hotdogs, chips, and lemonade for lunch (free). AND there were alligators and horses!!
I was at the registration table, checking in people and passing out lunch tickets and directions for getting the free fishing pole. There were two volunteers working with me (mom and mom-in-law of a co-worker). I didn't get around to the docks and bank areas to see the kids fishing but I did see the gators and the horses!!
This was my view from the registration tent as we were just getting started.
This dock was lined with kids fishing. They were fishing from the banks, as well.
The nuisance gator guy had a trailer with FIVE big gators in it. It was stinky... and too close to the registration tent when the breeze picked up!! LOL
And this little guy was the one caught by Officer Hunter for the kids to touch. He was very angry and kept trying to jump out of that bin. She had to put him back in the cage a few times. He was hissing and growling. I didn't even ask if I could hold him this year.
Now for those horses!!
This Clydesdale (or part Clydesdale) was named Scarlet
This is Tinker and his feet look more like a Clydesdale, but still not 100% by my guess.
Neither of them was really big enough by my estimation. I didn't ask...
The owner taking the photo told me to kiss him.
I put the event on my church's website and two families came from my church! One of the grandsons actually won the casting contest in his age group!! The other one stopped at the table on the way out and gave me a big hug. He and his mom had a great time (she said). He hugged me again at church yesterday and the grandma of the casting winner had to stop me to say they had such a good time (she wasn't at the event but her hubby was).
Palm Sunday was so beautiful at church yesterday. The kids marched in with palms to lay on the altar and it always brings tears to my eyes. Such a great way to teach them about the start of our Holy Week.
Peace & hugs!
He lives (He lives), He lives (He lives), Christ Jesus lives today
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life's narrow way
He lives (He lives), He lives (He lives), Salvation to impart
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart
Sounds like a great time for the kids.. and a memory maker.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blessed Easter Terri: What a fun day you had, all the children being able to experience the outdoors with other children is a plus in this world.
ReplyDeleteGetting and giving hugs and kiss's is a treat, so many people nowadays do not have the kindness in their hearts that we have had in the past (oh how I long for the simpler times)
I like looking at gators but not touching.
Jesus is in everyone's heart and souls its a shame many do not recognize him.
Happy Easter
Catherine
What a great day! Love the pictures of you with the horses and the little one from your church. Seems to me, you now have a friend for life. I'm so glad you had a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteAwesome turn-out, Terri! Pretty sure I'd be giving those gators a wide berth, too. Taped mouths or not, they creep me out. The horses on the other hand? 100% purebred or not, I'd have loved the chance to love on Scarlet or Tinker! Your account of the little guy has touched my heart. Thank you for telling us about that.
ReplyDeleteIt's been my experience that Draft horses tend to be docile. I guess they were bred that way so as to pull a plow without much fuss.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, what a perfect day!! I am so happy for you to be involved in such a fun place! And I absolutely love the pictures of you with the horses! (Much better than the alligator for sure!). Those must be young Clydesdales...they don't look very big, but they are beautiful!!! I am happy you got to kiss the one!! And the picture of you with the little boy giving you that hug...that's the best of all!! To see happy kids faces makes us all smile. And yes, I love that your church had the children come in waving their palm branches. Ours did not do that and I was disappointed, but I did see that the kids who went to Children's Church came out with some paper palm branches that they had made. I guess the timing wasn't right for them to march into church with them, but I would love to suggest that for next year as it was always a highlight of Palm Sunday for me in the past as well. Yes, this is a special week. I pray your Holy Week is filled the love of our loving Savior. Amen.
ReplyDeleteI love the photos my husband would love fishing I told him we should have been there but he said “well I don’t fit in with the youth” lol he loves fishing though
